the neck in front of the trachea. It secretes
several hormones, among them thyroxin, a
hormone containing iodine. This stimulates
growth, metabolism, and other functions of
the body. Excessive action produces Graves's
disease, characterized by bulging eyeballs
and an elevated metabolism, while deficient
action produces myxoedema in adults and
dwarfism in juveniles.
